My AutoRun is not working on my computer, why? (Windows NT Server 4.x or Windows 2000)
This answer is for Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000. On Windows 10 or 11, see My AutoRun CD does not launch on Windows 10 or 11.
Windows NT 4.0 (Workstation and Server) and Windows 2000 (Professional and every Server edition) have no on-screen switch for CD autorun. It is controlled in the registry:
- Click Start > Run, type
regeditand press Enter. - Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDRom. - Set the Autorun value to 1 to turn CD autorun on, or 0 to turn it off.
- Restart the computer.
Windows 2000 also honors the NoDriveTypeAutoRun policy described in the Windows XP answer. Back up the registry before you change it.
Try it yourself. AutoRun Wizard is free to download and fully functional - see how it handles this on your own USB drive or CD.
