How do I autorun a setup.exe installer from my CD?

Updated 10-28-2026 - AutoRun Wizard FAQ

Software distribution is the classic use for an autorun CD: the user inserts the disc, clicks Run autorun.exe in the AutoPlay prompt, sees your splash screen and license agreement, and your installer starts.

Set it up

  1. Copy your installer (setup.exe, or an .msi file) and everything it needs into the Base Folder, keeping its folder structure.
  2. On the Auto Launch tab choose Launch File(s), click Configure, and select the installer as the first file. An .msi file works too; Windows opens it with the Windows Installer.
  3. Optional: add a EULA so the user agrees to your license before setup runs, and a splash screen with your logo.
  4. Save, then click Test.

Separate 32-bit and 64-bit installers

If you ship two installers, add both as autorun files and check the 32-bit or 64-bit box on each one's File Properties. AutoRun Wizard runs only the one that matches the user's Windows. Details: different files for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows.

Run something after setup finishes

Choose Wait for this autorun file to close on the installer's File Properties, then add the next file (for example a readme or a "getting started" PDF). It opens only after the installer closes. See delaying the second autorun file.

What the user sees

  • User Account Control. Windows asks "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?" This is normal for installers. A signed installer shows your company name; an unsigned one shows "Unknown publisher."
  • Silent install switches. If your installer supports them (for example /S or /quiet), enter them in the Command Line box of the file's properties.
  • Corporate PCs often block installs for standard users. Nothing on the disc can change that.
Try it yourself. AutoRun Wizard is free to download and fully functional - see how it handles this on your own USB drive or CD.
